Blondes have all the fun, don’t they? That is more than a hackneyed phrase; it is a statement of fact. Of course you are skeptical but if you have never been blonde, how would you know? You need not take my word for it though. Even if you are a raven haired brunette, your blonde self is waiting deep within you just wishing for an opportunity to be let out. As I shall show you presently, how to get platinum blonde hair at home is just a few steps away. For, while there is much more to being a blonde than just the hair, it all starts with getting into character.
1. Prepare your Hair for Bleaching
It is important to ensure your scalp retains its natural oil prior to bleaching in order to protect your skin against the harmful action of the bleach. As such do not wash or shampoo your hair for at least three days before bleaching. The night before bleaching, soak your hair in coconut oil and leave it on overnight to offer even better protection for your scalp. Mix a little hair bleach with developer and use a few strands of hair from your hairbrush to test if the bleach is safe and effective.
2. Get Everything Ready
It is important to work quickly as soon as you start bleaching so you ought to have everything you will need before you get started. In addition to the bleaching kit and equipment, you need old towels, gloves, goggles and masking tape. Ensure the area is well ventilated before you start. Now you can mix the developer and bleach as advised by the manufacturer.
3. Applying the Mixture
Put on your gloves and goggles. You should also add tape around your eyes as an extra precaution. You should then part your hair into four sections and liberally smear Vaseline around your hairline, ears and neck. Using a brush, begin applying the mixture on your hair, starting at the back. Do not start at the roots as this will give you darker roots (unless that is the effect you are looking to achieve of course).
4. Waiting and Rinsing
Cover your bleached hair with a shower cap and wait for 40 minutes. By then your hair should have turned a pale yellow, the sign you need to rinse off the bleach. In any event, rinse off your hair before an hour is over from the moment you began applying the bleach or else your hair will turn too brittle. Use a PH neutralizing hair shampoo to wash and rinse off the bleach. Hold your hair under running water for at least ten minutes, all the while rubbing off all remnants of the bleach.
5. Finishing/ Enhancing the Look
If desired, you can use a toner (a semi-permanent hair dye) to enhance your new platinum blonde look. The toner is especially useful for counteracting some of the unwanted hues resulting from the bleaching process.
